One In Five School Staff 'Face False Claims'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Maret 2015 | 16.12

More than one in five school staff have had a false allegation made against them by a pupil, according to a survey.

A further 7% said they have been wrongly accused by a student's parent or family member, the poll by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) found.

The union says the problem is putting added stress onto education workers and causing some to consider leaving the profession altogether.

Of the school staff surveyed who said they had faced an untrue allegation, 69.5% said the claim was supposed to have taken place when they were working with a class or group of children.

Others said that incidents were alleged to have occurred in places such as in one-to-one sessions in school or college, on a trip, or somewhere unrelated to the school or college environment.

Some 2.1% said the alleged incident had taken place on social media.

A teacher from the South East told the union: "My late husband was falsely accused by a child he taught. Though the Crown Prosecution Service held that there was no case to answer, he was a broken man. He returned to work briefly, but had lost his nerve.

"The false accusation of one child, who was in an abusive home situation, wrecked our family life. My husband died of a sudden heart attack in his 50s."

And a Kent primary school teacher said: "The increasing occurrence of allegations is one reason why I will be leaving the profession sooner than I would like to. Poor parental discipline is leading to children always wanting their way.

"Unable to discipline children without a comeback has meant this sort of incident will escalate and very good teachers will be driven out when they are most needed."

The ATL's branch secretary in Cornwall, David Guiterman, is proposing a resolution at the union's annual conference in Liverpool next week on this issue.

The motion calls on the union to investigate whether local safeguarding children's boards are fulfilling their purpose and whether they are doing so in a reasonable time.

A Department for Education spokesman said: "We recognise the extreme damage which can be caused to teachers who have false allegations made against them, which is why we have made clear to schools and colleges that staff should be supported throughout, and are able to return to focusing their energies on teaching as swiftly as possible."

:: The survey questioned 685 members working in schools and colleges in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 19 February and 10 March.

Pension Data Sales Claims Trigger Inquiry

An investigation has been launched by the data watchdog into claims that details of milllions of people's pensions are being sold to cold-calling firms and fraudsters.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has described the revelations as "very worrying" and said it would be speaking to regulators and police.

The allegations have reinforced concerns about an upsurge in fraud as changes are introduced giving people access to their entire pension pots.

From 6 April, people can cash in their pension savings when they retire, rather than purchase an annuity.

Details of people's salaries, the value of their investments and the size of their pensions are being sold for as little as 5p without their consent, according to the Daily Mail.

The paper said its undercover reporters were sold information about the pensions of 15,000 people without any checks being made on who they were and what they would do with the data.

The ICO has already warned the pension reforms being brought in could lead to more people being scammed.

Steve Eckersley, the head of enforcement at the ICO, said: "It suggests a frequent disregard of laws that are in place specifically to protect consumers. We will be launching an investigation immediately.

"We're aware of allegations raised against several companies involved in the cold-calling sector, and will be making inquiries to establish whether there have been any breaches of the Data Protection Act or Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations."

The ICO has the power to slap companies with fines of up to £500,000 for the most serious breaches of the Data Protection Act and can pursue criminal prosecutions around unlawfully obtaining or accessing personal data.

Mr Eckersley added: "The information we've been shown supports the work we've been doing to target the shady industry that operates behind the nuisance of cold calls and spam texts.

"We're already aware of the potential for a huge spike in the number of scam texts and calls linked to pensions when the law changes in April, and have already taken action against a company that was sending out misleading messages.

"What we've seen here confirms those fears. Personal data is such a valuable asset, particularly financial information.

"The worst case scenario here is this information getting into the wrong hands and being used to target individuals at a critical point in their financial lives."

Are These Britain's Most Beautiful Faces?

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

As far as beauty goes, it doesn't get better than this.

Or at least that is what Britons taking part in a new facial mapping study have decided.

The study asked UK-based contributors to use computer e-fit software to put together a composite of what they considered the most attractive facial features.

The EFIT-V PhotoFit programme, usually used by British police to recreate the faces of wanted criminals, took into account factors including the thickness of lips, nose length and width, and hairline.

Those results were then judged by another 100 people who rated the images for attractiveness.

Meningitis B Vaccine Deal 'Will Save Lives'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 29 Maret 2015 | 16.12

A potentially life-saving vaccine against meningitis B will soon be available to all babies in the UK after a long stand-off over the cost.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Britain would become the first country in the world with a nationwide meningitis B vaccination programme after the Government reached a deal with drug maker GlaxoSmithKline.

The Bexsero MenB vaccine, which was recommended by health experts a year ago, will now be added to the national childhood immunisation scheme, with babies getting the first of three jabs at two months.

Mr Hunt said: "MenB can be severely disabling or fatal, especially in babies and young children. Losing a child is every parent's worst nightmare so I am delighted that we have reached an agreement with GSK."

Discussions between the department and the drug company over the price of the vaccine began in August last year, following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

The Department of Health will now work with GSK to secure supplies of the vaccine and bring it into the national immunisation programme, likely to be from September this year.

Leading meningitis charities have welcomed the deal, although they say they cannot understand why talks dragged on for so long.

Sue Davie, chief executive of Meningitis Now, said: "To know that babies will be protected against MenB is fantastic and another great step forward in our fight against meningitis.

"Families for whom this comes too late, and for whom we will always be here to support, have campaigned tirelessly and selflessly with us to make sure no other families suffer as they have."

Chris Head, chief executive of Meningitis Research Foundation, said: "When this vaccine is introduced it will save lives and spare countless families the trauma of seeing a loved one die or become seriously disabled because of MenB."

GSK said the deal represented "fair value" for the health service.

UK general manager Nikki Yates said: "We are delighted to have concluded an agreement with the Government just three weeks after we acquired the vaccine, which offers fair value to the NHS and at the same time is sustainable for GSK."

Police are investigating allegations of threats to kill BBC director general Tony Hall, reportedly linked to his decision to drop presenter Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear.

Scotland Yard confirmed it was looking into the claims after the BBC decided not to renew Clarkson's contract because of his unprovoked attack on producer Oisin Tymon.

Mr Hall, 64, and his wife Cynthia have been under 24-hour guard at their Oxfordshire home since the threats were made on Wednesday, according to reports.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police in Westminster are investigating an allegation of threats to kill. The allegation was reported to police on Wednesday, March 25.

"Inquiries continue. No arrests have been made."

One In Five Primary School Girls 'On A Diet'

By Afua Hirsch, Social Affairs Editor

The body confidence of young girls deteriorates rapidly as they progress through school, according to new research.

New figures from the Government Equalities Office show that one in five primary school age girls say they have been on a diet, while 87% of girls aged 11-21 think that women are judged more on their appearance than on their ability.

Poor body image among girls has also been associated with low participation in sport.

The research shows that 23% of girls aged 7-21 don't participate in exercise because they are unhappy with their body image, and 48% of girls think getting sweaty from taking part in sports is unfeminine.

There is also new insight into the long-term consequences of poor body image among young girls, which is associated with lower confidence, lower aspirations and lower social participation.

One in six GCSE students have avoided going to school because they feel bad about their appearance.

The research comes after a £10m advertising campaign showing active women, prompted by concerns about schoolgirls not participating in sports because they are worried about how their body looks.

Government agency Sport England's "This Girl Can" campaign has now gone viral, with more than 7 million hits worldwide but the Government says more needs to be done.

A British military health worker has been declared free of Ebola after being the first patient in the world treated with an experimental drug.

Corporal Anna Cross, 25, was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital on 12 March after contracting the disease.

She said she decided to allow doctors to use MIL 77, which they acquired from China, after "careful consideration".

Speaking at a news conference in London, she recalled her response when asked whether she was prepared to try the experimental drug.

"I said: 'I have Ebola, so I'd rather that than high-dose vitamin C. I'll have what drugs you think are good for me,'" she told reporters.

School Now Linked To 8 Girls Over IS In Syria

Four schoolgirls banned last week from leaving the UK over fears they would travel to Syria are from the same London school as four other girls who have already fled to join Islamic State, it has been revealed.

A judge has decided that it can now be made public that all eight teenagers were pupils at Bethnal Green Academy in east London.

In February, Kadiza Sultana, 16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, 15, left their east London homes for Syria, two months after a fellow pupil is thought to have left to join IS there.

But police had also raised concerns about four other girls at the school.

Last week, Mr Justice Hayden made the girls - aged 15 and 16 - wards of the court, preventing them from leaving the country without a judge's permission.

He made the move after social services at Tower Hamlets Council made an application to the Family Division of the High Court in London.

Social workers told the judge the girls might flee to areas controlled by the Islamic State and counter terrorism specialists at the Metropolitan Police also gave evidence during the week-long hearing.

The judge changed his order banning identification of the girls after the press appealed that identifying the school would be in the public interest.

The Press Association news agency argued that parents in the area considering schools for their children had a right to know.

:: Earlier this month Mr Justice Hayden, who said that sometimes the law had to intervene to protect young people from themselves, barred a 16-year-old boy from travelling abroad by making him a ward of the court.

The boy's two elder brothers had already been killed fighting for militants in Syria.

He also banned identification of this youngster but revealed that the local authority which had applied to have him made a ward of the court was Brighton and Hove City Council.

Cameron Vows 'Truly Seven-Day-A-Week' NHS

David Cameron is to launch his party's election campaign with a pledge to deliver a "truly seven day NHS" for England if he is returned to power on 7 May.

The Prime Minister will use the Conservative spring conference in Manchester to set out plans for patients to be able to access hospital services at weekends as well as during the week.

It comes the day after Labour leader Ed Miliband promised a "double lock" to safeguard the future of the NHS - £2.5bn of new investment and limits on further privatisation.

Mr Cameron will say that under Tory plans, hospitals across England will offer consultant-level services seven days a week by the end of the next parliament in 2020.

The changes will start with emergency and urgent care together with supporting services, such as diagnostics.

It follows the commitment to ensure patients can access GP surgeries seven days a week, between 8am and 8pm.

"For years it's been too hard to access the NHS out of hours. But illness doesn't respect working hours. Heart attacks, major accidents, babies - these things don't just come from nine to five," Mr Cameron will say.

"And the truth is that you are actually more likely to die if you turn up at the hospital at the weekend. Some of the resources are not up and running. The key decision-makers aren't always there.

"With a future Conservative government, we would have a truly seven day NHS."

However, the proposals have been met with scepticism by the British Medical Association (BMA).

"The £2bn extra funding that has been pledged falls far short of what is needed to deliver existing services, let alone fund additional care," said BMA council chair Dr Mark Porter.

"The NHS is recovering from one of the worst winter crises on record, during which some hospitals were forced to close their doors because they couldn't cope.

"With existing services stretched to breaking point… the NHS needs far more than just words to deliver extra care.

"Without a detailed, fully-costed plan, this is at best an empty pledge and at worst shameless political game playing with the NHS ahead of the election."

'Home Alone' Arrest Made Every Day - Report

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 27 Maret 2015 | 16.12

Every day a parent is arrested on suspicion of leaving one or more of their children at home alone, according to new research.

A study by the Press Association found 105 mothers and fathers faced criminal investigation for leaving youngsters unsupervised in the last three months of last year.

The cases involved children aged between just a few weeks old and 14 years old.

There is no law to specify at what age children can be left alone - but if they're placed at risk parents can be arrested and prosecuted for cruelty and neglect.

Figures provided by police forces in England and Wales following Freedom of Information (FoI) requests showed that 30 of those arrested were released without further action, 24 accepted a police caution and 19 were charged.

In other cases, investigations were ongoing or details of how suspects were dealt with were not available.

Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming, who has called on the Government to provide clarity over the issue, said it was difficult to comment on whether police actions covered by the FoI responses were reasonable without knowing the circumstances of individual cases but described the findings as "important research".

"Parents often get confused by what is happening," he said.

"The Government claims that the judgement as to whether it is right to leave a child home alone is made by the parents. However, in fact the judgement is made by the police and local council workers.

"Potentially, someone who leaves a baby in a car seat in a petrol station could face prosecution. Similarly, whereas an eight-year old can be sent to go swimming or to the park on their own, they are not allowed to stay at home (alone). There does need to be more clarity on this.

"This is where the state interfaces into ordinary life and people's lives can be massively disrupted merely for doing what they thought was right for their children."

Chris Cloke, head of child protection awareness at the NSPCC, said: "Children mature at different rates so it's vital we have a common sense approach that ensures flexibility for parents, as they are best-placed to know what is right for their child."
