Firefighters Tackle Blaze At Scottish Zoo

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirm that animals have died after a "fierce fire" broke out at a zoo.

The blaze, which has now been brought under control, occurred overnight in the tropical house of the Five Sisters Zoo at Polbeth, West Calder, West Lothian.

Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Ruth MacLeod told Sky News: "The firefighting operations are still continuing but it is contained.

"We do expect to be there for a number of hours yet."

No people were thought to have been injured in the blaze.

Ms MacLeod had earlier said: "We are currently trying to rescue two dwarf crocodiles and an otter."

The zoo is located some 30 minutes' drive from Edinburgh

A total of 11 fire engines, including specialist appliances, were involved in the operation at its height.

The fire service spokeswoman said: "The alarm was raised at 3.50am this morning to reports that the tropical house at the zoo was well alight.

"We had six fire appliances mobilised, along with five specialist appliances.

"Around 50 firefighters tackled the fire. The building involved was single storey, approximately 25 metres by 15 metres."

Fire crews used lines of hose to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

The privately-owned zoo was established in 2005 and is some 30 minutes' drive from Edinburgh.

According to the zoo's website, it is "probably one of the few places in the world where you can see at close hand a West African Dwarf Crocodile".

The zoo is home to over 100 species of animals, including meerkats, monkeys and assorted reptiles.

Ms MacLeod told Sky: "The Five Sisters Zoo arranged for a vet to attend to the affected animals and they are currently producing an inventory of any animals not accounted for.

"Fire investigators will be mobilised to try and establish the cause but it is too soon to speculate at this point."
