Human remains have been found on a farm north of Glasgow by officers searching for missing student Karen Buckley.

Police believe they may be those of the missing 24-year-old, but formal identification has not taken place.

Her relatives have been informed of the discovery on the outskirts of Milngavie.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and police said they were "following a definite line of enquiry". He is due to appear in court on Friday.

Ms Buckley was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning after a night out in Glasgow.

The student, from Cork, vanished after spending the night with friends at the city's Sanctuary nightclub.

She told them at around 1am she was going to the toilet but failed to return and left her jacket behind.

The student began an occupational therapy degree at Glasgow Caledonian University in February and was previously a nurse at the Princess Alexandra hospital in Harlow, Essex.

Her parents flew from Ireland to help with the search and told a news conference they were "desperate" for help.

"We just want Karen home safely, we are desperate. She is our only daughter, we love her dearly," said her mother Marian.

Ms Buckley's handbag was found on Tuesday in the city's Dawsholm Park, but on Wednesday the search shifted north of the city.

Dozens of officers began searching a remote country lane between Glasgow and Drymen, cordoning off the road to High Craigton Farm.

Officers also asked residents whether they had seen any bonfires there over the past few days.

Police had previously asked for information about a grey car spotted in the area between 11am and 3pm on Monday.

Hundreds of people have attended a mass at a church close to the Buckley family home in north Cork, and Irish foreign minister Charlie Flanagan said: "All of our thoughts and prayers are with Karen's parents, John and Marian, and with all of her family and friends at this tragic time."

A fundraising page set up by Ms Buckley's former classmates to cover her family's expenses in Scotland has raised more than £3,000.

Parking restrictions are being put in place near the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge is due to give birth to her second child.

The restrictions, detailed on yellow signs outside the private Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, come into force tomorrow.

They run until 30 April, suggesting the Duchess will give birth by this date at the latest.

Her due date has not been confirmed but reports have suggested it is around 25 April.

There is speculation that the baby, which will be fourth in line to the throne, could arrive on the Queen's birthday on 21 April, or William and Kate's fourth wedding anniversary on 29 April.

Kate is already on maternity leave and will return to St Mary's for the birth following the delivery of Prince George there two years ago.

She and Prince William chose the Lindo Wing as the place to have their first child, following in the footsteps of Diana, Princess of Wales, who gave birth to both her sons there.

Official confirmation that the Duchess is in labour is expected to come from Kensington Palace once she has been admitted to hospital.

'Third' Of GPs Thinking Of Quitting Before 2020

A third of GPs are thinking about retiring from general practice in the next five years, according to a survey of thousands of doctors.

Nearly four in 10 (37%) said their workload was too much to deal with, while 53% said it was tough but generally manageable.

Two-thirds (68%) also told the British Medical Association (BMA) that they experienced significant work-related stress, but insisted they could deal with it.

Just one in six said they were unable to handle the stress of their job.

The BMA survey questioned 15,560 GPs and also found one in five trainees (19%) was already thinking about writing off work in the UK in favour of a job abroad.

The doctors' association said it raised doubts over political promises to dramatically boost GP numbers over the next five years.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA GP committee chair, said the survey painted a bleak picture of frustrated GPs facing "burnout" and swamped by "pointless paperwork".

"In this climate, it is absurd that in the recent leaders' debate, political parties were attempting to outbid each other on the number of GPs they could magically produce in the next parliament," said Dr Nagpaul.

The head of the Royal College of GPs went further and said the pressures on GPs posed a "genuine danger to patient safety".

Dr Maureen Baker said: "Highly trained and experienced GPs are leaving the profession in growing numbers because of the intense and increasing pressures that we are facing, and not enough medical students are entering general practice to replace them.

"This is a genuine danger to patient safety - and to the wellbeing of hardworking family doctors and our teams."

"We simply don't have enough GPs to cope with the increasing demand of our growing and ageing population," added Dr Baker.

Karen Buckley: Police Search Glasgow Park

Dozens of police officers and a helicopter have been scouring a Glasgow park for clues on the disappearance of missing student Karen Buckley.

The entrance to Dawsholm Park was cordoned off after the 24-year-old's handbag was found there.

Ms Buckley went missing in the early hours of Sunday after leaving the house of a man she met on a night out.

The man, who is not currently a suspect, told officers she had left at 4am but the Irish student has not been seen since.

It is believed she was planning to walk back to her flat in Hill Street.

Her parents, who have flown from Ireland to help with the search, said it was typical for her not to use taxis.

Ms Buckley spent Saturday night with friends at Glasgow's Sanctuary nightclub on Dumbarton Road.

She told them at around 1am she was going to the toilet, but failed to return and left her jacket behind.

CCTV spotted her leaving the club with the man, whose identity has not yet been revealed.

Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr said: "We've traced the man she was with in Dorchester Avenue. He believes he was intimate with her at his flat consensually in the early hours of Sunday.

"From what we can see, she does not appear to be under duress, there's no signs of a struggle or reluctance on her part to leave the club.

"However, that does not mean that something untoward has happened to her at a later stage."

The parents of Ms Buckley, who studies occupational therapy and is originally from Cork, said they were "desperate" for the public's help.

"We just want Karen home safely, we are desperate. She is our only daughter, we love her dearly," said her mother, Marian.

"If anybody has any information please come forward, we would dearly appreciate it."

Ms Buckley's father, John, said: "If anybody is holding Karen, if anybody knows anything of her, please return her. Please let's have her back. We love her to bits."

Det Supt Kerr said Ms Buckley was widely travelled and was "aware of how to take care of herself".

Police also want to find out more about a grey car seen on the roads between Milngavie and Drymen, north of Glasgow, between 11am and 3pm on Monday.

Det Supt Kerr said: "The activity of this grey car on the Monday is something that we're a wee bit concerned about.

"This car has been seen at various locations on these roads and I want to know why."

Ms Buckley is between 5ft and 5ft 2in with brown eyes and dark hair which has long black curly extensions in it.

She was last seen wearing a black jumpsuit, red high-heeled shoes and carrying a black handbag.

Mugger Who Attacked 92-Year-Old For Â£5 Jailed

A robber who knocked over and injured a 92-year-old pensioner to steal £5 has been jailed for 30 months.

Solomon Bygraves, 29, told Stanley Evans he was going to help him with his wheelie bag as he returned from a shopping trip.

But as soon as he was in the block of flats he lunged for the pensioner's wallet, knocking him to the ground.

CCTV footage played at London's Southwark Crown Court showed Bygraves running off as the pensioner falls to the floor.

Mr Evans remained lying in the entrance to the flats in Soho, central London, for 10 minutes after the attack on 31 January.

Bygraves has 21 convictions for 49 different offences including two for robbery.

The judge, Recorder Andrew Mitchell QC, said the attack on Mr Evans, now 93, could have been fatal.

He said: "The victim in the case could easily have died, not through any other reason than just snatching something from him, and causing him therefore to fall down, and he could have just gone at that age."

"He was a very small, frail man and (Bygraves) must be more than 6ft."

The court heard Bygraves was out on bail for a domestic matter at the time of the attack.

He was coming down from Class A drugs when he spotted the "vulnerable old man" return home with his shopping.

Richard Sedgwick, prosecuting, said: "Mr Bygraves is an exceedingly large man.

"There appears to be some evidence of targeting - the age and the size difference point to that.

"Mr Evans presents as an easy victim."

Outlining the attack, he said: "Mr Evans is returning to his block of flats with his shopping. He is 92 years-old.

"The defendant follows him in behind him. There is a conversation. Mr Evans recalls it as being about visiting a friend inside the block of flats and helping him with his shopping.

"Mr Evans then waits for a lift. The defendant returns, accosts him, takes Mr Evans' wallet from him causing Mr Evans to fall to the floor where he is unable to rise from for some time."

The pensioner, a retired camera assistant who worked on films including the 1947 classic Brighton Rock, eventually managed to get to his feet and call 999.

The attack was branded as "totally unprovoked, callous and sickening" by police.

Mr Evans suffered a shoulder and arm injury in the incident.

Bygraves, who has bipolar disorder, initially denied the crime.

He said he went over to Mr Evans because he looked ill, the pensioner collapsed and he "panicked" and ran off.

But he later admitted it and has written a letter of "remorse" to the judge.

In his victim impact statement, Mr Evans said: "I believe that the man who robbed me should be punished for attacking a 93-year-old pensioner.

"He should not abuse his strength."

'Syria-Bound' Brit Waheed Ahmed Arrested In UK

A British man detained in Turkey for allegedly trying to cross illegally into Syria with eight members of his family has been arrested at Birmingham Airport.

Police say Waheed Ahmed, the son of Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed, was detained early today following his deportation from Turkey.

Ahmed is understood to have flown to Birmingham from Dalaman, according to Sky sources. The rest of the group are expected to be flown back to Britain later today.

A video released on Sunday showed Ahmed apparently leaving a Turkish police station and being put on a coach.

Ahmed was with his aunt, two cousins and one of their wives when they were stopped in Turkey, near the Syrian border on 1 April. They had four children with them.

Most of the group flew from Manchester on 27 March, but Ahmed joined them three days later on a flight from Birmingham.

There were reportedly concerns about his behaviour in the months before he was arrested.

Mohammed Shafiq, who is a friend of Shakil Ahmed, said of Ahmed: "There were concerns in the last six months to a year about a change in his behaviour.

"And a change in his attitude towards various different issues."

He also told Sky News: "That was causing concern for people in the community and his family."

Other family members detained in Turkey include Zareeda Bi, 47, Maboob Yasin, 22, Habib Yasin, 24, Samia Bi, 22, and youngsters aged one, three, eight and 11.

Police are trying to establish their reason for travelling to the Syrian border.

The Foreign Office said it did not comment on individual cases.

Officers have searched at least five homes in the Manchester area, including that of the Labour councillor.

Cllr Ahmed said he thought his son had been in Birmingham on a work placement when he discovered he had been detained in Turkey.

He has described him as a "good Muslim" and said his son's "loyalties belong to Britain".

"If I thought for a second that he was in danger of being radicalised, I would have reported him to the authorities," said Cllr Ahmed.

Inflation Steady At 0% Annual Rate In March

The annual rate of inflation has remained steady at 0% for the second consecutive month.

The Office for National Statistics said the consumer price index (CPI) measure remained at its lowest level since comparable records began in 1989 as transport costs rose - offsetting weaknesses in food and clothing prices.

Fashion costs fell between February and March for the first time on record, the ONS said, possibly reflecting changes to seasonal discount patterns.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages were 3% cheaper year on year in March, though this was a smaller decline than in the previous month.

Petrol costs rose as oil recovered a bit of ground following its dramatic collapse last year.

The ONS said fuel prices rose 3.8p between February and March, though they were still down sharply on the year.

It has been oil weakness and the effects of the supermarket price war that have driven inflation to the brink.

Some economists had predicted the CPI calculation would turn negative for March, showing prices falling on an annual basis.

While the governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has welcomed the prospect of price falls for consumers and most businesses he has pledged to guard against the possibility of the UK entering a more entrenched period of falling prices, known as deflation.

Economists say deflation is unwelcome in any economy because it tends to delay purchases amid hopes the cost of goods and services will be cheaper in future.

Static prices have arrived at a time when wages are starting to grow following six years of inflation outpacing salary increases.

The last ONS figures on wages showed annual growth of 1.6% when the effects of bonuses were stripped out.

Mr Carney has been awaiting better news on wage growth as a pre-condition to raising the base rate of interest from its historic low of 0.5%.

But the inflation figures place the Bank's monetary policy committee under no pressure to act and most economists see no prospect of bank rate going up until next year.

The Bank has forecast a short period of negative inflation within months.

That is likely to be aided by figures showing that core inflation, a measure which strips out volatile factors such as energy and food, fell sharply to 1.0% in March,

The pound fell by half a cent against the US dollar, hitting $1.46, shortly after the ONS released the figures.

Jail Threat As 'Revenge Porn' Law Comes In

Sharing sexually explicit images without consent carries a potential two-year jail sentence from today, as a new 'revenge porn' law comes into force.

The measure targets people who share images or video without permission and with the intention of causing distress.

They are often posted by an ex-partner and sometimes accompanied by personal details, such as a social media profile.

The new law includes uploading to the internet, sending by text, email or messaging platforms, as well as simply showing someone a physical or electronic image.

The Crown Prosecution Service says it "covers images that show the genitals but also anything that a reasonable person would consider to be sexual, so this could be a picture of someone who is engaged in sexual behaviour or posing in a sexually provocative way".

Campaigners hope it will dramatically reduce the number of cases of revenge porn and make it easier to get justice for victims.

Previously, a mix of existing laws, such as the Communications Act and the Protection from Harassment Act, were used to prosecute offenders.

Children as young as 11 have been victims, according to the police.

Calls for a bespoke law gathered momentum after recent high-profile leaks of intimate celebrity images featuring the likes of Rihanna, Jennifer Lawrence and Tulisa Contostavlos.

Campaigner Hannah Thompson, 22, called the changes a "huge step forward".

She said: "I was a victim of revenge porn, and I spent months agonising over it and believing that it was my fault.

"This new law, along with the advice helpline, empowers victims and clearly displays that they are not at fault."

There were 149 allegations of revenge porn in the two and a half years to September 2014, according to eight police forces in England and Wales with data on it.

The vast majority were women but only six incidents ended with any kind of police caution or charge.

Other laws coming in under the Criminal Justice and Courts Act include increasing the maximum jail term for online trolls to two years, and making it illegal to possess extreme pornography that depicts rape.

'Syria-Bound' Briton To Be Sent Home To UK

One of nine Britons held in Turkey on suspicion of trying to illegally enter Syria is being flown back to the UK, Sky News understands.

Waheed Ahmed - the son of Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed - will fly from Dalaman into Birmingham overnight today, according to Sky sources.

The remaining eight will return on Tuesday, it is understood.

Man Arrested Over Syrian Preacher's Murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Syrian-born preacher Abdul Hadi Arwani, who was shot dead in northwest London.

The 46-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday evening in Brent, the Metropolitan Police said.

He remains in custody at a central London police station.

Mr Arwani - a critic of the Bashar al Assad regime - was found in his Volkswagen Passat in Wembley with gunshot wounds on 7 April.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Arwani or his car on Sunday 5 April or Tuesday 7 April.

Detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) unit have taken the lead in the investigation because of their "expertise in the management of investigations with international dimensions and an established liaison network abroad".

They have discovered that Mr Arwani, 48, had driven near to where his body was found on the morning of 5 April, and parked in Havenwood, where he remained for a short time.

The force said officers were "open-minded" about the motive of the killing.

Mr Arwani, a father of six, was an imam at the An Noor mosque in Acton, west London, between 2005 and 2011.

He is thought to have fled Syria as a teenager in 1982 after surviving the Hama massacre. He is believed to have attended protests against Assad outside the Syrian embassy in 2012.

Mr Arwani's 20-year-old son, Murhaf Arwani, has appealed for people to help the police in their investigation.

He said: "The police are currently investigating this brutal murder. As an individual, a family and a community, we are helping the police to solve this heinous crime.

"Any information we have has, and will be passed on to them and we urge anyone with any information to please please please do the same.

"To members of the public that knew my late father and even those of you who didn't know him, please tell us what you know. We know that it won't bring our father back to us but it may help to deliver justice to those who killed him."

More Buyers Building Homes - The Old Way

With property prices rising and many young people still finding it hard to get a mortgage, more and more would-be homeowners across Britain are turning to one of the oldest methods of building.

Cob building involves using earth, sand, straw and clay as the raw materials for walls. It's estimated that a three-bed cob home would cost in the region of £25,000 to build.

All that's needed is a plot of land and planning permission - and the right knowledge.

Charlotte Eve runs classes on how to build cob homes from her Norfolk base and says that hundreds of people are signing up to learn the skills needed for their own projects.

"You can't get more sustainable than a cob home," she told Sky News.

"You dig your foundations on site and you use the clay from that foundation trench to make your walls. It's very environmentally friendly and it's also cheap - cheap in terms of construction costs and also in terms of heating the finished home.

"Your costs for the project are extremely low."

Self building accounts for only 10% of the UK market. That's despite lower costs - £150,000 for the average project, which is £80,000 less than a ready-made home.

Tony Tkaczuk from Lancashire is working on an upgrade of his cob cottage and says he'd recommend a self-build to anyone.

"It's very fulfilling actually, you have done it yourself and that's a great feeling," Tony told Sky News.

"You can work together as a team, like my wife and I do. And at the end it's wonderful to think to yourselves 'yes, we did that'."

At the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Watford, experts monitor construction trends across the UK each year. They point out that around 11,000 projects in Britain last year were self-builds.

"There's a lot of time, energy and emotion required," said BRE's chief executive, Dr Peter Bonfield. "There are a lot of benefits to self-builds, you can feel really proud of what you have achieved.

"There are also a lot of professional companies out there doing this kind of thing day in and day out. So it's a choice really, a big decision for people."

The Government hopes self-built properties could help combat a housing shortfall of 750,000 homes across the UK by 2025.

Aintree Racegoer 'Knocked OAP To The Ground'

Police are investigating after a video emerged appearing to show a Grand National racegoer deliberately knocking over an elderly man.

The video is believed to have been made outside the racecourse in Aintree where around 150,000 people attended the event.

In the footage, a racegoer walks along the pavement before knocking into the victim, who then falls to the ground.

Onlookers are heard gasping and seen rushing to the pensioner's aid before an ambulance is called.

The video appears to have been made by a friend of the racegoer and he shouts "text bomb" and "is there any need?" just moments before the incident, as he sniggers from behind his phone.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said officers are treating the incident as an assault and appealed for help in finding the victim.

"Merseyside Police has been made aware of a video showing a man shoulder-barging another, older man, over in a road near to the Aintree racecourse," he said.

"The incident is being treated as assault and officers are speaking to several people believed to have further information that could help the investigation.

"Inquiries are also being carried out to establish exactly when and where the incident occurred and checks are being made with local hospitals to see if further information can be found out about the victim and what his condition is now.

"We are grateful to the people who reported this video to us and we will endeavour to update them once further enquiries by officers have been made. "We would continue to welcome any information from anyone who witnessed the incident itself on 101. "

Earlier, police said the annual race had seen no arrests over its three-day course, thanking the public for making the event such a "safe and enjoyable occasion".

British Boy Killed In Alps Ski Fall 'Was Lost'

A British boy who died in a skiing accident while on a family holiday in the French Alps was skiing alone at his own request, according to reports.

The seven-year-old fell around 160ft from a cliff to his death in the alpine resort of Flaine on Friday.

He had been skiing with his mother, brother and sister but is understood to have asked to ski the day's final descent on his own.

His family became worried after he failed to reach the bottom of the slopes, prompting a search which ended when his body was discovered around three-and-a-half hours later.

The circumstances around the incident are still being investigated by the authorities, with some reports suggesting the boy was instead somehow separated from his family.

There have been reports that the boy was not skiing on his own, and had instead gotten lost from the group he was with.

Michel Ollagnon, an officer with the Bonneville mountain rescue service, said the boy's body was spotted off his expected course by rescuers in a helicopter on Friday evening.

Police chief Patrick Poirot, the head of the mountain rescue division in the nearby town of Annecy, was quoted in the Daily Mirror saying: "Specialists are at the scene to try and determine exactly what happened and understand every element that led to this tragedy.

"Hypothetically we think that, after losing his parents, the little boy didn't know where to go and skied in the wrong direction.

"He's just seven-years-old.

"He left the marked ski slope and probably skied to the top of a cliff.

"He then stopped, removed his skis, walked a little way and then fell.

"He fell 50 metres."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said they were aware of the death and are providing consular assistance.

One Dead As Stolen Ambulance Collides With Bus

The driver of a stolen ambulance has been killed after the vehicle crashed into a double-decker bus near York, according to Sky sources.

The person driving the ambulance - who police believe was not a paramedic or a member of ambulance staff - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the bus and five of its 16 passengers were taken to hospital after the collision on the A64, near the Flaxton junction, about 8.30pm.

Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Another person, travelling in a Toyota Yaris with one other, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Motorists have been asked to stay away from the area.

North Yorkshire Police tweeted: "The A64 at #York, near the Flaxton junction, is closed in both directions due to a serious collision. Please avoid the area."

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash or saw either of the vehicles beforehand to contact police and quote reference number 556 of 10 April.

Jewel Heist: Victims' Anger As Alarm Ignored

The Metropolitan Police has come under fire after it emerged officers initially failed to go to the scene of the Hatton Garden jewel heist despite a burglar alarm going off.

A security firm had contacted the force about an intruder alert at the safe deposit company shortly after midnight on Good Friday.

But the call was graded in a way that meant officers did not consider it worthy of a response.

And it was not until Tuesday morning, following the four-day bank holiday Easter weekend, that the raid - one of Britain's biggest - was discovered.

The Met is now investigating why the force did not respond to the alarm activated as the heist was thought to be getting under way.

Police insisted it was too early to say if the handling of the call about the alert would have had an impact on the outcome.

But the revelations have led to anger from potential victims who spoke of their shock that the police "just weren't there".

Millions of pounds worth of gems were thought to have been stolen in the raid in London's jewellery district.

Michael Miller, from Knightsbridge, who may have lost £50,000 in uninsured jewellery, said: "I am just so shocked and disappointed to hear the police didn't answer that alarm.

"I mean before, we thought maybe the police didn't even know about that but now we know that they knew something was wrong.

"This completely changes things, the knowledge that something could have been done.

"The police pride themselves on being somewhere in a couple of minutes, but on this occasion they just weren't there."

A store owner near the scene, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's just shocking that someone didn't answer that call that come in when the alarm went off.

"You think what on earth isn't a high priority call if it's isn't a safe deposit alarm going off in there.

"I know they're investigating but really what is the good of that when the damage is done. There are people who will have lost their livelihoods because of this."

Scotland Yard said: "The call was recorded and transferred to the police's CAD (computer aided despatch) system. A grade was applied to the call that meant that no police response was deemed to be required.

"We are now investigating why this grade was applied to the call. This investigation is being carried out locally."

Those behind the raid disabled a communal lift shaft and climbed down to the basement before using power tools to drill through a two-metre wall into the vault.

Once inside, they ransacked a total of 72 safety deposit boxes, although five were empty at the time.

A further 11 were due to be "drilled out" due to non-payment of fees, meaning detectives are attempting to contact a total of 56 box holders.

Grand National Expects Record Betting Bonanza

More than nine million people are expected to watch the Grand National today, as bookies predict the biggest betting turnover of all time.

The National gets under way at 4.15pm at Aintree with 39 horses lining up to tackle the famous course, over 30 fences and nearly four-and-a-half miles.

Air Pollution Alert: UK Set For Hottest Day

The elderly and people with health problems have been warned to avoid strenuous activity because of harmful levels of air pollution expected to blanket parts of the UK.

The warning comes as forecasters say Britain could enjoy the hottest day of the year so far, with parts of eastern England predicted to reach highs of 22C (71.6F).

Eastern, central and southern England are forecast to be affected by "high" pollution today.

Parts of East Sussex and west Kent are expected to reach "very high" levels, according to the Government's UK-Air monitoring service.

The high levels are due to domestic soot particulates, combined with dirty air from the Continent and some Saharan dust.

With the fine, settled weather conditions the pollution will be trapped over the UK for several hours.

Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis, head of the air pollution group at Public Health England, said: "While most people will not be affected by short term peaks of air pollution, some individuals, particularly those with existing heart or lung conditions, may experience increased symptoms."

Dr Vadoulakis said in areas with very high pollution levels people should reduce physical exertion if they develop a cough or sore throat.

He added: "Adults and children with lung problems, adults with heart problems, and older people should avoid strenuous physical activity.

Radicalisation - 'Third Of Muslims' Blame Police

More than a third of British Muslims blame the actions of the police and MI5 for radicalising the younger generation, suggests an exclusive Sky News poll.

Some 39% said the authorities were contributing to radicalising young people, with 29% saying they were not.

The research found the issue of young people travelling to fight with extremist groups, including Islamic State, or becoming so-called 'jihadi brides', remains highly controversial.

Abase Hussen, father of 15-year-old Amira Abase - one of three London teenagers to head to Syria in February, has blamed police for failing to warn families the girls were at risk.

However, the opinion poll - carried out for Sky News by Survation, suggests both Muslims and non-Muslims were most likely to see families as being responsible for preventing young people heading to Syria: 44% of Muslims and 65% of non-Muslims agreed.

Just 3% of Muslims thought the police were responsible, 15% said the Government, 9% religious leaders and 2% schools.

Sympathy with those leaving the UK to fight for or marry terrorist groups in Syria was highest among women.

Some 11% of female Muslims agreed they had a lot of sympathy, compared to 5% of males. The figures for non-Muslims were at 4% for both sexes.

However, a majority of Muslims and non-Muslims said they had no sympathy for those joining extremist groups.

The Sky News survey is the first of its kind and looked at what Muslims and non-Muslims think about issues including radicalisation, security concerns, political uncertainty, a rise in hate crimes and growing prejudice.

We asked 1,000 Muslims and 1,000 non-Muslims to share their opinions and found that while 71% of Muslims in the UK said the values of British society were compatible with those of Islam, 16% believed they were not.

The results found younger Muslims were more likely to see their values aligned to those of Britain, with 73% of those aged 18 to 34 agreeing, compared to 71% of those aged over 55.

Male Muslims were also more likely to agree - 78%, versus 64% for females.

On the issue of integration into UK society, the survey found 58% of non-Muslims believed their Muslim neighbours were not doing enough, with those aged over 55 more likely to be critical.

Woman Held Over M60 Crash 'Murder Attempt'

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a motorway crash which left three people injured.

Police say a red Renault Megane was travelling clockwise at junction 20 of the M60 at 7.10pm on Thursday when it swerved and collided with the central reservation.

A 43-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and a 19-year-old-man were taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The carriageway was closed in both directions but was later opened.

Police asked anyone with information about the collision to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 3243.

Murdered Preacher Spoke Out Against Terror

A Syrian-born preacher who was shot dead in London did not hold radical views and was "actively involved in the fight against extremism," according to his family and community.

Abdul Hadi Arwani was found in his Volkswagen Passat in Wembley with a gunshot wound to the chest on Tuesday morning.

A murder investigation was launched into the death of the 48-year-old, who was a preacher at the An-Noor Mosque in Acton, and is now being led by counter-terror police.

Mr Arwani's son Abdelmoneim Mahmoud, one of his six children, posted a message on Facebook on behalf of his family paying tribute to his "peaceful" father.

"He was the most peaceful man you could ever wish to meet," the statement said. "He just loved to help people. He did not care what your background, race or status was."

Mr Mahmoud continued: "My father was actively involved in the fight against extremism, campaigning for peace and advocating the importance of democracy and freedom.

"He loved the idea of freedom for all, regardless of religion, race and background.

"He spoke up and out against the crime of terror and oppression wherever he found it."

An-Noor Mosque has previously hosted the son of radical preacher Abu Hamza, and was the location for the November 2013 escape of terror suspect Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who dressed himself in a burka.

But Mr Arwani had been "the voice of reason and transparency" at the mosque, where he was a preacher between 2005 and 2011, the family said.

Visitors to the mosque added that the cleric, a British national who was born in Syria, did not hold radical views.

One visitor said: "He was a beloved man, he used to give lectures, and teach. He was well loved in the community around here. And he wasn't radical or anything, that wasn't him."

A post-mortem examination into Mr Arwani's death will take place today.

Footballers May Be Among Jewel Heist Victims

Some of the UK's top footballers could be among the victims of the Hatton Garden safe deposit raid.

Jewellers who store gems at the diamond centre in Holborn, central London, do commission work for a number of Premier League stars, a source told Sky News.

They work on high-priced orders for wives and girlfriends and for the footballers themselves.

"Players have almost unlimited spending power and love to outdo each other with extravagant purchases, especially where jewellery is concerned," said the source.

"It's only natural they would go to the renowned craftsmen of Hatton Garden to place their orders."

The players affected are likely to play for the top London clubs, but it is thought stars of other clubs visit the dozens of jewellers in Hatton Garden when they are playing or partying in London.

Flying squad detectives said up to 70 safe deposit boxes were broken open, but they had not informed the victims because forensic work was still going on.

The raiders are believed to have broken into the building through the roof and abseiled down a lift shaft.

Heavy cutting equipment was then used get into a vault, believed to be reinforced with thick metal and concrete doors, up to 2ft thick.

The stolen jewellery and precious stones, which could be worth millions of pounds, will already be out of the country, former Flying Squad chief Barry Phillips believes.

He described the heist as "sophisticated" and "highly organised" and said it would have been carried out by a "professional team".

Questions have been raised about security at the premises amid reports guards responded to an alarm on Friday, but left without checking inside.

Safe deposit box owner Gerry Landon said he found the break-in "unbelievable".

"Apparently, as you may have read, the alarm went off at one o'clock on Friday and the security guards came down," Mr Landon said.

"They more or less looked through the window to see that there was no activity there - and then they left."

Neil Duttson, a diamond dealer who buys stones for private clients, said tracing gems stolen in the heist would be nearly impossible.

"Once diamonds have been re-cut and polished there is no geological map," he said.

"I imagine they will be sat on for six months. You can expect some cheap diamonds will be coming on the market soon."

Police have not put a value on the goods stolen, but estimates vary widely from hundreds of thousands of pounds to £200m.

Oil Find Near Gatwick May Be 'World Class'

The estimated size of an oil find near Gatwick Airport has been upgraded to 100 billion barrels.

UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG) said the Horse Hill-1 well in the Weald Basin was now thought to hold 158 million barrels per square mile.

In May 2014, the British Geological Survey estimated the Weald Basin to hold around 4.4 billion barrels of shale oil.

UKOG described the find as a possible "world class" resource with the potential for "significant daily oil production."

The company's Chairman David Lenigas, said it would create "many thousands of jobs" but cautioned that it would take a long time to begin production.

He said: "You've got to work through government process and to work with the local community. Everybody expects you to snap your fingers and all of a sudden the magic panacea is there. The key thing is there is a potential resource of significance here - but the fast track or slow track nature is really going to be determined by Westminster".

The US-based firm which studied the reservoir estimated that recovery of the oil would be limited at between 3% and 15% of the total.

It also insisted there was no need to use the controversial extraction process, known as fracking, to get access to the oil.

Mr Lenigas said: "Horse Hill is a conventional well, with conventional testing and we've got permission from the government authorities for a conventional programme. There will be no fracking at Horse Hill."

The UK currently produces 770,000 barrels of oil per day, compared to 11.1 million in the United States and 11.7 million in Saudi Arabia.

The announcement helped shares in UKOG rise more than 300% during trading on Thursday.

But the environmental campaign group Greenpeace urged people to focus on clean technologies.

Greenpeace's Chief Scientist Dr Doug Parr said : "To gleefully rub your hands at a new fossil fuel discovery you need to turn the clock back to the 19th century and ignore everything we have learnt about climate change since. We already have more than enough coal, oil, and gas reserves to fry the planet"

'Ordinary Yorkshire Lads' Feared To Be In Syria

The families of two teenage boys believed to have travelled to Syria have said they are "in a state of profound shock" and are exrtremely concerned for their safety.

The seventeen-year-olds, named as Hassan Munshi and Talha Asmal, are thought to have fled to the country after travelling to Turkey on 31 March.

The pair, from Dewsbury, were last seen by their families on the day they are thought to have flown from Manchester airport to Dalaman.

A statement released on behalf of the two families said: "Our number one priority is to get Hassan and Talha back home ... and we implore anyone who may have any information whatsoever to get in contact with the police.

"These were just two ordinary Yorkshire lads who enjoyed the things that all young people enjoy at their age - both Hassan and Talha had a promising future as an apprentice and an A-level student respectively, and we are praying they will be back with us soon and are able to realise that future."

The statement added: "We would implore all parents to be extra vigilant, although as we found, it's near impossible to know your children have been groomed and brainwashed.

"Syria is a frightening war-torn place and we need to urgently educate our young children about the dangers posed by those who prey on impressionable teenagers."

Hassan is believed to be related to Hammaad Munshi, who was arrested by counter-terrorism police in 2006 at the age of 15 and later convicted over his role in a plot to murder non-Muslims, The Times newspaper reported.

West Midlands Police says it has been supporting the two families and carrying out extensive inquiries alongside the North East Counter Terrorism Unit.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Milsom said: "Syria is an extremely dangerous place and the public will be aware of the dangers these boys may face.

"The choice of returning home from Syria is often taken away from those that come under the control of Islamic State, leaving their families in the UK devastated and with very few options to secure their safe return."

He urged anyone concerned that a friend or relative may be contemplating travelling to Syria to contact police or local safeguarding units.

The two teenagers are believed to have travelled on a Thomas Cook Airlines flight out of Manchester.

A spokesman for the company said: "Whilst we cannot confirm the names of any of our passengers who travel with us, we can reassure all our customers that we work closely with all authorities to ensure the safety of our flights in and out of the UK."

UK security services believe around 600 Britons have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join militant groups, with around half now back in the UK.

They include three teenage girls from East London, who are now thought to be in the Syrian city of Raqqa, an Islamic State stronghold.

Shamima Begum, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana were last seen on CCTV at a bus station in Istanbul on 17 February.

Last week, nine Britons were arrested allegedly trying to cross into Syria from Turkey illegally.

All Passports To Be Checked On UK Exit

New border checks are being introduced today which will require every passport to be thoroughly verified before a person can leave the UK.

The checks are being introduced at seaports, airports and tunnels which provide exit points from the British Isles.

The changes are expected to particularly affect cross-Channel and Channel tunnel travellers, who will now need to have their passports scanned.

As airlines currently gather passengers' information ahead of time, there is unlikely to be a noticeable difference in queues for passengers.

But there are fears of delays at peak travelling times while the changes are implemented.

Until now, many people have been able to leave the country without having their passport scrutinised.

The Home Office says the changes will strengthen Britain's border security, adding that the implementation of the checks will be staggered at sites across the country.

For the first month all passports will be scanned, but only 25% of passport holders will have their details verified.

In the second month 50% will be checked. By the middle of June, 100% of passports will be fully checked.

Security and immigration minister James Brokenshire said: "It is right that we have an immigration system that is fair, that tackles immigration and that clamps down on anyone who tries to cheat the system by staying here when they have no right to do so.

"Exit checks will provide us with vital information that confirms a person's exit from the UK.

"Port and travel operators are experts in their business and know their customers best, which is why we've supported them to design and trial the systems for collecting data in a way that will minimise the impact on customers."

More staff have been brought in to cope with the new measures, but whether the changes will have a detrimental impact on passengers will not be known until peak travelling times, such as the summer months.

A P&O spokesperson said: "They have picked a quiet day for the introduction of the checks.

"The actual scanning of passports is quick, it's the verification that takes longer. We are hoping there will be a fairly seamless transition to the new system."

Jewellery Heist: Gems 'Already Out Of Country'

Gems stolen in one of the largest and most daring jewellery heists ever will already be out of the country, a former Flying Squad chief believes.

Jewellery and precious stones, which could be worth millions of pounds, were snatched by thieves from a vault in Hatton Garden, London.

The audacious villains are believed to have broken into the building through the roof and abseiled down a lift shaft to access the vault.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police said heavy cutting equipment was then used get into a vault at the premises, where 300 safe boxes raided.

The vault is believed to be reinforced with thick metal and concrete protection doors.

Speaking to Sky News, former Flying Squad chief Barry Phillips described the heist as "sophisticated" and "highly organised".

He said the robbery will have been carried out by a "professional team".

"This has all the hallmarks of a TV or Hollywood film production," Mr Phillips said.

"It was a highly organised, sophisticated crime.

"It's highly likely that any gems or jewellery will have already been sourced and out of the country.

"If past jobs of this nature are taken into account, the thieves will have placed all of the jewellery prior to the robbery.

"That takes a high degree of organisation on behalf of the villains."

Police have not put a value on the goods stolen, but estimates vary widely from hundreds of thousands of pounds to £200m.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "I'm told that there are 600 boxes on the premises, 300 of which have been raided.

"The suspects have had perhaps several days (over Easter weekend) in which to get in.

"One report, I'm told, suggested that they used a lift shaft at some stage to get into the centre, which must be pretty heavily protected.

"It's probably going to be some days before we get an idea of exactly how much has been stolen or what indeed has been stolen."

Hatton Garden is known as London's jewellery quarter and the safe deposit boxes are mainly used by local jewellers to store loose diamonds in packets.

Other boxes - around 10% of them - are rented by private individuals and so the true value of the heist may never be known, Mr Phillips said.

Lewis Malka, a diamond jewellery expert who works in Hatton Garden, tweeted: "Quiet day in the office and then I found out one of my client's antique bracelets was stolen in the Hatton Garden robbery."

Mr Malka added: "Most of the people who have got safe deposits there are people in the trade.

"I know for a fact that some of my work colleagues have got boxes down there and we are talking about hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds in goods."

In 2003, cash and valuables worth an estimated £1.5m were stolen after a suspect emptied safe boxes at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Co while posing as a customer.

In July 1987, the Knightsbridge Safe Deposit Centre was hit by one of the largest robberies in history.

Two armed robbers asked to rent a safe deposit box and produced handguns after they were shown to the vault before making off with an estimated £60m hoard.

Valerio Viccei was arrested as he returned to England to ship his Ferrari Testarrosa to Latin America.

He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Skin Cancer Rise Blamed On Package Holiday Boom

The cheap package holiday boom of the 1960s and 70s means pensioners are now seven times more likely to develop the deadliest form of skin cancer.

New figures from Cancer Research UK show that men aged 65 and over are 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with malignant melanoma than their parents' generation.

Older women are around five times more likely to develop the disease.

Each year, some 5,700 pensioners are now diagnosed with melanoma each year in the UK compared with 600 in the mid-1970s.

Age is a big risk for melanoma, but the increase is blamed on package holidays which became popular in the 1960s.

Getting sunburnt once every two years can triple a person's risk of developing the disease.

Professor Richard Marais, Cancer Research UK's skin cancer expert based in Manchester, said: "It's important for people to keep an eye on their skin and seek medical opinion if they see any changes to their moles, or even to normal areas of skin.

"Melanoma is often detected on men's backs and women's legs but can appear on any part of the body."

Malignant melanoma is the country's fifth most common cancer overall and the second most common cancer in young adults aged 15 to 34.

Each year, 2,100 Britons die from the disease.

Dr Julie Sharp, Cancer Research UK's head of health information, said: "Sun damage accumulates over time so avoiding sunburn - and sunbeds - is key, as well as getting to know your skin type so you don't overdo it on the beach or even in the garden."

Retired teacher Sue Deans, 69, from Croydon, south London, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2000 after having a mole removed.

She said: "I was part of the generation where package holidays became affordable and you could go abroad nearly every year.

"I don't think there was much understanding at the time about the impact that too much sun can have on your risk of getting skin cancer."

Warm Easter Weather To Continue All Week

The warm Easter weather looks set to continue into the week.

Temperatures could reach 21C (70F) in some places, when the average UK temperature for April is 11.4C (52F) and for England is 12.4C, according to the Met Office.

Despite many holidaymakers expected to return from the Easter break on Monday the continued high pressure will ensure conditions in most areas will remain settled for the rest of the week.

The South and South West of England will see the best of the warm weather while in northeast Scotland it will be sunniest while northwest Scotland could see some cloud developing.

Most of Northern Ireland, particularly the east coast, will also enjoy spells of sunshine.

Sky's weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said: "Most places will continue with the dry and sunny conditions - however, eastern coastal regions and Irish sea coasts may be affected by sea fog.

"It will feel warm in the sunshine today, with top temperatures of 12-18C (54-64F)."

Alleged Rapist Who Fled UK Caught In India

A man who allegedly fled Britain after two attacks on women has been caught while trying to buy a fake passport in India, police say.

Raminder Singh, 28, is accused of sexual assault, rape and attempted murder in July 2012 when he was in the UK.

One woman, aged 23, was found unconscious in Pilvig Park in Edinburgh in a pool of blood, with a broken jaw and cheekbone, and a missing tooth. The attacker had attempted to rape her.

A few days later a 27-year-old woman told police she had been subjected to a serious sexual attack and rape.

Police believe Singh was involved in both incidents and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

However, he managed to leave the country the next day and fly to India.

An extradition request was sent to the country from the UK, but Singh is thought to have changed his identity multiple times.

It is believed that in the meantime he worked at a call centre and even opened a restaurant.

A police source told Sky News that because some of his relatives worked in the Punjab police, there was not much interest in the case.

While on the run he is believed to have lived for some time with his relative Gurwinder Singh, a police inspector at Punjab Police Academy.

Local crime commissioner Ravindra Yadav told Sky News: "The Delhi Police was requested by the British High Commission to help nab the fugitive.

"The British police gave some inputs to us which we developed. We were roped in as they had confidence in us."

Singh was tracked for several months as a result.

An officer told Sky News that Singh was trapped when he was on his way to meet someone to buy a forged passport, and was held on Sunday night at the Singhu northern border of Delhi.

He has since appeared in court and the UK government will now move to have him extradited.

Boy, 14, And Girl, 16, Held By Anti-Terror Police

A 14-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl have been arrested on suspicion of planning acts of terrorism.

The boy was held after officers from the North West Counter-Terrorism Unit and Lancashire Constabulary raided a house in Blackburn on Thursday.

Police examined a number of electronic devices found on the premises.

They suspect the boy of "preparing for an act of terrorism under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006".

The girl was arrested after police and counter-terrorism officers raided a house in Clee Avenue, Longsight, Manchester, the following night.

She is suspected of "engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism".

Both youngsters have been bailed until 28 May.

An eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News that Clee Avenue was "full of terrorist police" when the girl was arrested at around 8pm on Friday.

The ongoing investigation is not thought to be related to the Rochdale family detained in Turkey for allegedly trying to cross into Syria.

The five adults and four children were arrested on Wednesday and are due to be deported back to Britain later.

Police have searched three properties in Rochdale and two in Heywood as part of the inquiry.

Police Get More Time To Question Syria Suspects

Police have been given more time to question six people arrested in Dover on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences.

The five men and one woman were detained around 8am on Friday in the port's departure area.

Officers now have until 8am next Friday to charge or release them, or apply to detain them further.

Police said four of the men arrested are from Birmingham and in their 20s.

A 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman of no fixed address were also held.

They are being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands area.

The force said the suspects were not a family group, were not accompanied by children and did not pose any immediate risk to public safety.

CCTV Appeal As Woman, 93, Hurt In Hit-And-Run

Police are hunting for a driver who left a 93-year-old woman lying in the middle of the road after a hit-and-run crash.

They have issued a CCTV image of the silver Chrysler Voyager thought to have struck Isobel Rawes in Shirley, West Midlands.

The pensioner is still in hospital being treated for the serious injuries she suffered.

Police said she was hit as she crossed Stratford Road at around 11.50am on 24 March.

A spokeswoman said: "The driver failed to stop at the scene and left the victim lying in the carriageway before driving away in the direction of the M42.

"Following extensive CCTV inquiries, police have identified the car as a silver-coloured Chrysler Voyager.

"It is believed that the vehicle will have damage to the front passenger side."

Sergeant Adam Green, from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I would urge anyone that has seen a Chrysler Voyager with damage to the front passenger side to come forward.

"It may be that the driver has confided in a friend or family member or a neighbour has noticed recent damage.

"It is important that we speak to the driver in order to understand the reasons for the collision and the subsequent driving away from the scene to provide answers to the family of Mrs Rawes."

Anyone with information can contact the collision investigation unit on 101.

Tories Pledge 1980s-Style Housing 'Revolution'

A 1980s-style housing "revolution" doubling the number of first-time buyers by 2020 has been pledged by the Tories, if they are elected.

The plan would mean half a million people a year getting their feet on the housing ladder, George Osborne said.

Labour claims Britain's chronic housing shortage is being fuelled by Coalition schemes such as Help to Buy and no action is being taken to boost supply.

Ed Miliband's party unveiled plans on Saturday to take the new ISA scheme for first-time buyers announced in the Budget and use it to finance wide-scale house building.

But Mr Osborne told the Sunday Telegraph he was determined to push even harder to open home ownership to more people.

He said as many as one million people would enjoy direct government help to purchase properties over the next parliament.

"I think we can deliver a revolution in home ownership," the Chancellor told the newspaper.

"We want to see a massive increase in the number of people who can own their own home because home ownership is an absolutely core Conservative belief and aspiration that we support.

"In the next parliament I would like to see over a million more people helped into home ownership by a Conservative government.

Since 2010 there have been 1.2 million first-time purchases and Mr Osborne wants at least 2.4 million more over the next five years

Shadow housing minister Emma Reynolds said: "More warm words on housing from the Chancellor will be cold comfort to the record number of young people and families priced out of home ownership over the past five years.

"Under this Tory-led government we've seen the lowest levels of housebuilding in peacetime since the 1920s and home ownership has fallen to a 30-year low.

"Labour's Better Plan will ensure Britain builds the homes working people need.

"Labour will get at least 200,000 homes built a year by 2020, backed by a comprehensive plan - the first in a generation - and a £5bn Future Homes Fund to support the building of homes for first-time buyers."

The Tory pledge came as a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times showed the party overtaking Labour to move into a one point lead by 34% to 33%.

But Opinium research for The Observer had the Conservatives down one point on 33%, level-pegging with Labour (unchanged), while UKIP was up one point on 14%.

Liberal Democrats were down one on 7%, Greens were unchanged on 7% and the Scottish National Party were up one on 4%.

In a dramatic development on Saturday, an inquiry was ordered into the leak of a UK Government account of a private meeting between SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon and the French ambassador.

The Daily Telegraph published the diplomatic memo which suggested she had indicated that she would prefer to see Conservatives remain in power after the 7 May General Election.

Ms Sturgeon complained of a "dirty tricks" attempt to halt the party's advance.

She said it was "100% untrue" that she had expressed such a preference - a denial backed by French diplomats at the meeting.

But the memo was seized on by Labour leader Ed Miliband as a "damning revelation" of the SNP leader's true views.
